Soichiro "Swimmy" Minami

Trustee, The Garibay Institute

Soichiro "Swimmy" Minami is a Trustee at The Garibay Institute for Soft Power and Public Diplomacy. He is also a prominent Japanese entrepreneur and executive who has significantly advanced the field of human resources technology. Minami's diverse upbringing across Japan, Canada, and the United States was pivotal in cultivating his global outlook and entrepreneurial drive.

 

Minami attained his higher education at Tufts University, graduating magna cum laude in 1999 with dual degrees in Quantitative Economics and International Relations.

In 2009, Minami founded BizReach (known as the LinkedIn of Japan), which later transitioned into Visional, a company that has become a key player in the HR technology industry. Visional aims to assist organizations in the identification, acquisition, and management of talent, striving to transform the future of work in Japan. The company offers an array of HR technology services, including recruitment platforms and Human Capital Management (HCM) Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions. Under Minami’s leadership, Visional has achieved substantial growth and success. The company successfully launched on the Tokyo Stock Exchange in April 2021.

Minami's forward-thinking approaches to addressing Japan's workforce challenges—such as the nation’s aging population and declining birthrate—have earned him international acclaim. He was selected for the EY World Entrepreneur Of The Year™ Class of 2024 for Japan, recognizing his efforts to rejuvenate the Japanese economy through data-driven HR innovations. In 2014, he was selected as a Young Global Leader (YGL) by the World Economic Forum, an initiative identifying exceptional leaders under 40 who drive positive societal impact.

 

Beyond his primary business activities, Minami has expanded his interests into other areas. In 2023, he became a co-owner of the New York Yankees, fulfilling a personal passion for baseball and broadening his international business engagements.

Minami’s professional trajectory serves as a model for emerging entrepreneurs, especially within the HR technology sector. His capacity to identify market demands, create innovative solutions, and effectively scale enterprises has solidified his status as a leading figure and one of the most successful entrepreneurs in Japan.
