The Garibay Institute is entering a new chapter as Ronald C. Gunnell assumes the role of president, bringing decades of leadership, diplomacy, and global relationship-building to the Los Angeles based think tank.

Founded by renowned producer and global strategist Fernando Garibay, The Garibay Institute was created to unite leaders across industries, including academia, government, finance, and the creative sector, to advance collaboration and innovation on a global scale.

Now, with Gunnell stepping into the presidency, the organization strengthens its leadership with a figure known for building connections that span continents and cultures.

Gunnell describes the partnership between himself and Garibay as one rooted in shared purpose.

“I was honored, and I could see that the work the institute is doing in the areas of systems diplomacy, with state governments, religious leaders, academics, and corporations around the world, suited me perfectly,” Gunnell explains. “Combining our assets, our minds, and our hearts together has made the institute incredibly strong in its initiatives to promote world peace through soft power rather than hard power.”

His appointment comes at a time when diplomacy and global understanding are more important than ever. The institute focuses on advancing dialogue across sectors, particularly as emerging technologies like artificial intelligence reshape communication and global policy.

“We’ve seen an increasing need for people to understand one another,” Gunnell adds. “There is a growing demand to explore how we move forward together in diplomacy, especially in a rapidly changing technological world.”

Before joining The Garibay Institute, Gunnell also served as Global Envoy for the Tabernacle Choir Presidency, a role he has held since 2000. In that capacity, he helped organize guest performances and appearances at historic landmarks and events attended by royalty and political leaders, helping bring music to audiences around the world.

Throughout his career, Gunnell has worked with notable cultural figures and public personalities, helping shape programs that brought music and diplomacy together on the world stage. His work emphasized connection, cultural exchange, and the unifying power of performance.

Garibay recognized those strengths when selecting Gunnell for the presidency.

The early months of Gunnell’s leadership have already included participation in diplomatic and cultural initiatives, including meetings with global leaders and collaborative discussions in locations such as the Vatican, Egypt, and China. Future programming is expected to include events at major venues such as the Hollywood Bowl.

Beyond professional achievements, Gunnell credits his resilience and leadership style to his personal journey.

He reflects openly on a challenging childhood that shaped his understanding of compassion, responsibility, and perseverance, values that continue to guide his work today. Alongside his professional responsibilities, he remains deeply committed to caring for his twin sister with special needs, a role he describes as central to his life.

“I sit back, and I am humbled,” Gunnell shares. “Considering how my life began, I never imagined I would have the opportunity to meet global leaders or contribute to missions of this scale. I believe the importance of this work continues to open doors.”
